Hazard pictogram: Hazard pictograms form part of the labeling of chemicals. Dangerous images serve as an eye-catcher and a rough adaptation. Pictograms help us know if the chemicals we are using can harm people or the environment.
The hazard pictograms can be downloaded from the UNECE website.
The hazard pictograms are defined as black symbols on a white background in a red rhomboidal border.
There have 09 Hazard pictograms as below:
Acute toxicity (Symbol: skull and crossbones):
Even small quantities may lead to serious poisoning and death.
Corrosive (Symbol: corrosion):
May cause severe skin burns and eye damage. May dissolve certain materials (e.g. textiles). Is harmful for animals, plants and all kinds of organic material.
Explosive (Symbol: exploding bomb):
May explode on contact with flames or sparks, by percussion, friction or heating. May lead to explosions when incorrectly stored even without external influence.
Flammable (Symbol: flame):
May ignite on contact with flames and sparks, by percussion, friction, heating, contact with air or water. May catch fire when incorrectly stored even without external influence.
Gas under pressure (Symbol: gas cylinder):
Contains compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases. Odourless or invisible gases may escape unnoticed. Containers with compressed gases may burst when heated or deformed.
Hazardous to the environment (Symbol: environment):
May be highly toxic to aquatic life such as fish, insects and plants in low concentrations or by long-term exposure
Health hazard/Hazardous to the ozone layer (WARNING HAZARDOUS) (Symbol: exclamation mark):
May cause skin irritation, trigger allergies or eczema, cause drowsiness. May trigger poisoning after a single contact. May destroy the ozone layer.
Oxidising (Symbol: flame over circle):
May cause or intensify fires. Releases oxygen when burnt, can only be extinguished with specific agents. Impossible to smother the flames.
Serious health hazard (Symbol: health hazard):
May damage certain organs. May lead to an immediate and long-term serious health risk, cause cancer, genetic defects, damage fertility or development. May be fatal if it enters the airways.
